Liposuction is one of the most versatile body contouring procedures available today. Fully customizable, liposuction, or simply lipo, can be used to change the shape and overall appearance of the area treated and can be combined with a host of other procedures, for a drastic recontouring of the body.

Several techniques exist aimed at removing unwanted fat. Liposuction producers are among the most frequently requested techniques we see in our practice.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is by no means a weight loss procedure, and patients considering re-contouring procedures are strongly advised to reach their goal weight and maintain it for several months prior to going under the knife.

Even slight fluctuations in weight can affect the outcome of a procedure, as well as the surgeon’s treatment strategy. Many patients who undergo liposuction, especially of the abdomen and waist may appear to have lost weight, and may experience a change in dress size following a lipo procedure.

Liposuction Surgery

Specifically, lipo removes pockets of stubborn, unwanted fatty deposits, with the use of an aspirator and a cannula. Using negative pressure, the surgeon targets pockets of fat with the goal of reducing the size or changing the shape of the area treated. Small incisions are used, about ¼ of an inch wide, to accommodate the long metal cylinder used during lipo, called a cannula. Using methodical strokes of the cannula wand, the surgeon sucks out stubborn fat with the goal of recontouring the area being treated.

Liposuction procedures are versatile enough to treat virtually any area of the body where stubborn fat accumulates; from the chin to the ankles, and everywhere in between.

Areas of the Body Treatable by Liposuction

  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Waist
  • Upper/Lower Back
  • Chin
  • Arms
  • Breasts
  • Inner/Outer Thighs
  • Ankles
  • Calves
  • Pubis Mound

Although liposuction can produce dramatic results when performed on its own, it is often combined with complementary procedures such as: Tummy Tuck, Mommy Make Over, Breast Augmentation, and Breast Lift, among others. It is necessary to undergo liposuction in order to complete fat grafting procedures; where fat removed from a patient’s trouble areas are processed then added to increase volume as in the casa of the Brazilian Butt Lift and Fat Grafting Breast Augmentation.

Fat can also be grafted to areas on the face to reduce the visibility of deep wrinkles, correct undereye bags, and enhance the cheeks, chin and forehead. Patients can also opt to treat more than one area during a lipo procedure, such as Lipo 360 where all areas of the torso are treated, resulting in a slimmer waist, flatter tummy, and removal of love handles, and bra rolls.

Liposuction Candidates

As with the majority of cosmetic surgeries, patients undergoing liposuction must be in good health, not smoke and wish to address a specific concern through surgery. Candidates for liposuction undergoing weight loss should wait until their weight has stabilized. Patients who have loss massive amounts of weight may consider additional surgeries to address excess skin stemming from severe weight loss.

Ideal Candidates for Liposuction

Ideal candidates for liposuction have realistic expectations for the outcome of their procedures and understand liposuction is a body reshaping surgery and not a weight loss solution. Patients bothered by excess fat in a given area of their body which is not responding to diet and exercise are ideal for a liposuction procedure.

Benefits of Liposuction

The results of a successful liposuction become apparent once the typical swelling following surgery subside. Patients can enjoy improved muscle definition, improved or diminished appearance of cellulite, and the disappearance of fatty deposits which patients find troublesome.

In cases where the torso is treated, patients enjoy a flatter, more defined abdomen, slimmer waist, removal of love handles, and bra rolls.

Patients undergoing liposuction procedures often experience a boost in confidence as they no longer feel the need to hide parts of their bodies which previously made them feel self-conscious. Encouraged by their results, often times patients adopt a healthier life style following a liposuction procedure. Motivated by the desire to maintain or improve upon their results, patients may choose to work out more often or efficiently, and adhere to a healthier diet following surgery.

Tumescent Liposuction

Performed as an outpatient procedure in most cases, patients are able to go home within a few hours following their procedures. The industry standard is Tumescent Liposuction, where a solution is first introduced into the patient which causes the fat cells to expand and blood cells to contract, enabling the surgeon to easily target fat. One the patient is under and the solution has been administered; a thin cannula is introduced via small incisions to the area to be treated. Attached to an aspirator (think “vacuum”), fat is suctioned out in small increments until the desired result is achieved. Smaller areas may only require one or two incisions, while larger areas may require more.

Laser Lipo

Non-invasive techniques such as Ultracavitation, Cool Sculpting, and Laser Liposuction, are available and may be ideal for treating minor concerns such as small pockets of fat at the knees, lower abdomen, and back. Patients opting to go this route may end up spending more money and time as they may require multiple treatments to obtain results. These ulterior procedures may aid in improving the appearance of skin, however for removal of fat deposits, traditional lipo is king.

Liposuction Results

Many times, patients contact us for more invasive procedures, such as a Tummy Tuck, under the misconception that liposuction alone can’t treat their concern. Liposuction alone can drastically improve the contours of the body resulting in the harmonious, hourglass silhouette so many of our patients are seeking. When combined with other procedures, such as procedures of the breast, or fat grafting procedures, patients can significantly improve multiple areas of concern in one pass.Once fat cells are removed via liposuction they never return to the area treated; but weight gain will still be noticeable and perhaps exacerbated in other areas of the body. Fat redistribution following a liposuction procedure is normal.

Patients who maintain their weight and adhere to a healthy lifestyle can enjoy the benefits of their liposuction for years without the need of revision liposuction procedures. Lipo is not an anti-aging treatment, so areas treated will continue to age naturally.

Liposuction Recovery

Immediately following surgery, patients will experience swelling, and may have post-surgical drains in place to aid in the collection of fluid following surgery. Post-surgical lymphatic massages may also be prescribed to further alleviate swelling and fluid retention.

Post-surgical compression garments are worn by most patients who undergo liposuction. These garments serve to protect the treated area during recovery, and to prevent damage to the surgeon’s work, such as skin rippling. The total compression body shaper slims and smooths the torso and back and may be worn in addition to an abdominal board and lipo foam pads, which serve to prevent skin bulging and indentation during recovery.

While every patient is different, most lipo patients can return to non-strenuous activities including work after about 5 days of rest.

Cost of Liposuction

As with all cosmetic surgeries, geolocation, surgeon’s fees, facility fees, and cost of anesthesia may impact the price of liposuction. In the United States, the average patient can expect to spend at least $3000 for liposuction. The cost of Liposuction in Miami can differ vastly from practice to practice and can be impacted by the time of year and location. The price of liposuction may be included in the price of ‘combination’ procedures such as the Brazilian Butt Lift, Tummy Tuck, or Mommy Makeover; however, patients wishing to have additional liposuction may be assessed additional fees.
