Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery or eyelid lift surgery, is a cosmetic procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids. Surgically removing pockets of fat and excess skin from the upper or lower eyelids can rejuvenate the eyes and restore functionality to the eyelids.

Is Blepharoplasty right for you?

You may benefit from eyelid surgery if:

  • You have loose skin at the upper eyelids which is beginning to sag or droop
  • You have fat pockets making you look tired
  • Your lower lids appear to be “sliding down” revealing your lower eye
  • Your lower eyelids appear puffy due to fat deposits and loose skin
  • Your vision is impaired due to sagging eyelids

Eyelid Surgery Procedure

There is no magic number or perfect age to get eyelid surgery. Most patients get this procedure in their 40’s, but if sagging eyelids run in your family, you may opt to undergo this procedure sooner.

Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.Once the patient is under, a small incision is made at the crease of the eyelid and excess fat is removed. The skin is trimmed, and the incision is sutured.Patients go home the same day of surgery.

Lower Blepharoplasty

The incision for lower eyelid surgery is hidden in the lower lash line. The incision is made at the outer corner of the eye, and fatty tissue causing puffiness is removed. Excess skin is trimmed and the incision is sutured.Patients go home to begin recovery the same day, once cleared by the surgeon.

Non-Surgical Eye Lift

Patients more concerned with wrinkles than excess skin can explore non-surgical options like Botox to treat crow’s feet. Having Botox in the forehead provides a gentle lift, improving the look of the area without surgery.Lower eyelids can be treated with dermal fillers to reduce the appearance of tired eyes. These options are not viable for sagging skin which impedes eyesight. Consult your surgeon to find out which approach is right for you.

Recovery from Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty patients can expect swelling, bruising, blurry vision, and light sensitivity immediately after surgery. The symptoms improve as the days pass, and most patients look presentable within a week or 2.
The results of eyelid surgery are permanent, but the skin will continue to age along with the rest of you. It is important for patients to wear sunblock and sunglasses when in the sun to avoid damaging the sensitive skin of the eyes.
